A BYD C10MS became the first battery electric double decker bus to pass rigorous durability road testing under the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) guidelines at the Model Bus Testing Program in Altoona, Pa.

The C10MS joins a full range of BYD zero-emission vehicles that have passed the Altoona test, which is considered the most significant durability challenge for transit and coach buses in the world.

“This is another proud achievement for BYD,” said BYD Senior Vice President for Operations Patrick Duan. “The BYD C10MS is not only a luxury double decker coach, but it is also practical, as it serving the needs of commuters and tourists throughout the world. We appreciate our many U.S. customers who have already deployed this zero-emission coach in their operations and look forward to delivering many more of them.”

Established in 1989 by the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute with funding provided by the Federal Transit Administration, the Larson Transportation Institute’s Bus Research and Testing Center in Altoona Pennsylvania, tests buses for safety, structural integrity, durability, performance, maintainability, noise, emissions, energy economy, and fuel economy. 1000th BYD ADL Electric Bus Delivered in UK

May 31, 2022 by

ABERDEEN, Scotland (May 29, 2022) — Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and BYD UK jointly announced that their electric vehicle partnership, the UK’s leading electric bus producer, has delivered its 1000th zero-emission bus. The BYD ADL Enviro400EV double decker was part-funded by the Scottish Government and handed over to Stagecoach Bluebird in Aberdeen during Scottish Bus Week in the presence of the Scottish Government’s Minister for Just Transition, Employment and Fair Work.

The 1000th BYD ADL electric bus delivered to Stagecoach in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Working in partnership since 2015, ADL is a subsidiary of leading independent global bus manufacturer NFI Group Inc. (NFI), and BYD is a global leader in batteries, energy management and electric mobility.
Sales of the market-leading, British-built BYD ADL Enviro200EV single decker and BYD ADL Enviro400EV double decker have accelerated rapidly as the transition to zero-emission mobility gathers pace in the United Kingdom. While it took five years to reach the 500th BYD ADL electric bus, the partnership has now delivered its 1000th vehicle just one year later.
This bus is the last of a fleet of 22 BYD ADL Enviro400EV double deckers which Stagecoach bought for services in Aberdeen with financial support from the Scottish Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme. Stagecoach has since confirmed an order for an additional 13 electric buses of the same type for Aberdeen following the award of funding through the Scottish Government’s follow-on scheme, the Zero-Emission Bus Challenge Fund.
At an event during the inaugural Scottish Bus Week, Minister for Just Transition, Employment and Fair Work, Richard Lochhead MSP, joined ADL’s National Account Manager Marie Connell in handing over the anniversary bus to Stagecoach Bluebird Managing Director, Peter Knight, before touring the newly installed EV charging hub at Stagecoach’s Aberdeen Tullos Depot.
Minister for Just Transition, Employment and Fair Work, Richard Lochhead said: “I’m really pleased to witness the 1000th electric bus manufactured by ADL – a great example of successful collaboration between Scottish operators and manufacturers, supported by Scottish Government funding.
“Through the Scottish Ultra-Low Emission Scheme we’ve supported the introduction of 22 new electric buses here in Aberdeen for Stagecoach Bluebird.
“Alongside free travel for under-22s and over half a billion pounds in long term funding for bus priority infrastructure, we’re putting buses at the heart of Scotland’s just transition to net-zero by helping people choose to travel more sustainably. We can only achieve that transition by working together.”Marie Connell, National Account Manager at ADL, said: “This milestone demonstrates the incredible pace at which the transition to zero-emission mobility is now happening thanks to bus companies’ drive for innovation and Government support.
“With 1000 electric buses now on the road, our customers benefit from the BYD ADL partnership’s unrivalled experience. Stagecoach’s new order for another 13 of these electric double deckers will further extend the benefits as passengers will enjoy a smooth and quiet ride and the people of Aberdeen will breathe cleaner air.”
Peter Knight, Managing Director for Stagecoach Bluebird, said: “We are all really excited to be sharing BYD ADL’s celebration of delivering its 1000th fully electric bus. Introducing these new vehicles reflects the investment both we and Scottish Government are making thanks to the Scottish Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme and the funding made available to support the delivery of the new buses.
“There has never been a more important time to take action to address the climate emergency and play a part in helping Scotland deliver on its net zero ambitions whilst improving local air quality in Aberdeen.
“The introduction of these 22 new fully electric buses on our bus routes in Aberdeen reflect our commitment to creating a greener, smarter, safer and healthier country and at the same time will deliver major benefits for the region and our customers.”
Frank Thorpe, Managing Director, BYD UK, said: “BYD is delighted to be part of this successful partnership, which continues to go from strength to strength as the desire for zero-emission electric buses gains real momentum throughout the UK. This momentous handover to Stagecoach Aberdeen underlines how BYD ADL electric buses are becoming ‘the eBus brand of choice’ for many operators, as a result of our combined specialist expertise and world-leading technology.”

Baton Rouge adds three more BYD 35-foot K8M battery electric buses to its fleet

May 12, 2022 by

BATON ROUGE, La. (5/12/22) – BYD Thursday announced the delivery of three more American-made all-electric buses to the Capital Area Transit System (CATS) in Baton Rouge.

The zero-emission, smooth-riding K8M 35-foot buses were built BYD at its Lancaster, Ca., Coach & Bus Manufacturing facility. Each vehicle is equipped with a 435kWh LFP battery and can be fully charged within three hours.

The Capitol Area Transit System (CATS) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, recently added three more BYD K8M 35-foot buses to its fleet.

The most recent delivery represented the final installment of a nine-vehicle purchase by CATS from BYD, the world’s leading electric-vehicle manufacturer. CATS, which provides transit service across Louisiana’s capital city, has committed to growing its zero-emission bus fleet to at least 50% of the total number of vehicles it operates.

“We care about reducing emissions and protecting the environment. The more electric vehicles we have, the better it will be for all of us,” said Dwana Williams, CATS Interim Chief Executive Officer.

BYD’s partnership with the transit agency earned CATS the “Rising Star” award from the Louisiana Clean Fuels organization. Every American-built, zero-emission BYD bus eliminates approximately 1,690 tons of carbon dioxide over its 12-year lifespan, according to the U.S. Transportation Department.

“We’re proud to support CATS’ commitment to providing zero-emission transit in Baton Rouge, with all-electric buses that are made here in the United States and employ technology that is revolutionizing the industry,” said Patrick Duan, BYD’s Senior Vice President of Operations.

The K8M 35-foot buses also are noted for their reliability and smooth, quiet ride. Each has a 32-passenger seating capacity and a 28-passenger standing capacity.

“Our passengers love the new vehicles,” CATS’ Williams said. “They’re amazed at how the buses look, how quiet they are, and how nice the ride is.

Link Transit Acquiring Eight More BYD Battery-Electric Buses for Central Washington Community

May 3, 2022 by

WENATCHEE, Wa. (May 3, 2022) – BYD announced Tuesday that Wenatchee-based Link Transit has purchased eight additional 30-foot American-made BYD battery-electric buses, building on Link’s long commitment to energy-saving, zero-emission transit technology.

The eight new BYD buses will complement Link’s growing all-electric fleet of 12 30- and 35-foot vehicles, with three additional 35-foot buses on order. Once the new vehicles are delivered, nearly half of Link’s total heavy-duty fleet of 48 vehicles will be all electric.

“We’re thankful for our partnership with Link Transit and to have the opportunity to provide their community with state-of-the-art clean-technology vehicles that are redefining public transportation,” said Patrick Duan, BYD’s Senior Vice President of Operations.

The eight new buses are being built by BYD at its Lancaster, Ca., Coach & Bus Manufacturing facility. Every American-built, zero-emission BYD bus eliminates approximately 1,690 tons of carbon dioxide over its 12-year lifespan, according to the U.S. Transportation Department. This is equivalent to taking 27 cars off the road. Each bus also eliminates 10 tons of nitrogen oxides and 350 pounds of diesel particulate matter, improving air quality in the communities that they serve.

“These vehicles have been a tremendous success for us. Without opportunity charging, we’re seeing a range of 190 usable miles. With our Momentum Dynamics wireless opportunity chargers, we are extending this range to over 300 miles per day by charging the vehicles for 5 to 7 minutes 4 – 5 times per day while the vehicle is in the terminal on its hourly end of run lay-over. We have succeeded in replacing our diesel buses with our BYD buses on a one-to-one basis. We use these vehicles for all of our urban routes, in everyday use, with significantly lower operating costs. BYD has been great to work with,” said Richard DeRock, General Manager of Link Transit.

The Link Transit battery-electric fleet in 2022, averages 44 cents a mile in total operating costs, versus 88 cents a mile for its diesel vehicles. (With the recent run-up of diesel prices, the cost per mile has increased to 92 cents).

DeRock noted that the battery-electric buses have been particularly effective in navigating the extreme climate conditions within Link Transit’s service area. “It’s a very challenging operating environment – our winters are cold, and we can see 100 degrees in the summer. Finding vehicles that can maintain their effective range under these conditions is critically important,” he said.

Portions of the fleet were purchased with the help of state funding, including $28.5 million from the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP) administered by Caltrans and the California State Transportation Agency.

Every American-built, zero-emission BYD bus eliminates approximately 1,690 tons of CO2 over its 12-year lifespan, according to the U.S. Transportation Department. This is equivalent to taking 27 cars off the road. Each bus also eliminates 10 tons of nitrogen oxides and 350 pounds of diesel particulate matter, improving air quality in the communities that they serve.

BYD is America’s first battery-electric bus manufacturer that has both a unionized workforce and a Community Benefits Agreement, which sets goals for hiring veterans, single parents, second chance citizens, and others facing hurdles in obtaining manufacturing employment.
