Today, BYD officially announced the launch of the Blade Battery, a development set to mitigate concerns about battery safety in electric vehicles.

At an online launch event themed “The Blade Battery – Unsheathed to Safeguard the World”, Wang Chuanfu, BYD Chairman and President, said that the Blade Battery reflects BYD’s determination to resolve issues in battery safety while also redefining safety standards for the entire industry.

BYD highlighted a video of the Blade Battery successfully passing a nail penetration test, which is seen as the most rigorous way to test the thermal runaway of batteries due to its sheer difficulty. “In terms of battery safety and energy density, BYD’s Blade Battery has obvious advantages,” said Professor Ouyang Minggao, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor at Tsinghua University.

The Blade Battery has been developed by BYD over the past several years. The singular cells are arranged together in an array and then inserted into a battery pack. Due to its optimized battery pack structure, the space utilization of the battery pack is increased by over 50% compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries.

BYD Blade Battery Pack

While undergoing nail penetration tests, the Blade Battery emitted neither smoke nor fire after being penetrated, and its surface temperature only reached 30 to 60°C. Under the same conditions, a ternary lithium battery exceeded 500°C and violently burned, and while a conventional lithium iron phosphate block battery did not openly emit flames or smoke, its surface temperature reached dangerous temperatures of 200 to 400°C. This implies that EVs equipped with the Blade Battery would be far less susceptible to catching fire – even when they are severely damaged.

The Blade Battery also passed other extreme test conditions, such as being crushed, bent, being heated in a furnace to 300°C and overcharged by 260%. None of these resulted in a fire or explosion.

He Long, Vice President of BYD and Chairman of FinDreams Battery Co., Ltd., covered four distinct advantages of the Blade Battery including a high starting temperature for exothermic reactions, slow heat release and low heat generation, as well as its ability to not release oxygen during breakdowns or easily catch fire.

In the past few years, many EV manufacturers have fallen into a competition for ever-greater cruising range. When the range becomes the prime factor to consider, this focus is then transferred to power battery makers, leading to unreasonable pursuits of “energy density” in the battery industry. It is due to this unpractical focus on “energy density” that safety has been sidelined from power battery development. BYD’s Blade Battery aims to bring battery safety back to the forefront, a redirection from the industry’s tenuous focus on this crucial aspect.

BYD Han EV

“Today, many vehicle brands are in discussion with us about partnerships based on the technology of the Blade Battery,” said He Long. He added that BYD will gladly share and work with global partners to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for all industry players.

The Han EV, BYD’s flagship sedan model slated for launch this June, will come equipped with the Blade Battery. The new model will lead the brand’s Dynasty Family, boasting a cruising range of 605 kilometers and an acceleration of 0 to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

Brand also launches four new electric vehicles equipped with the leading, ultra-safe battery technology

Chongqing, China — On April 7, 2021, BYD, a leading global EV maker, officially announced that all of its pure electric vehicles will now come with the brand’s ultra-safe Blade Batteries, with nail penetration testing fully adopted as a brand standard. At the same time, the Blade Battery completed an extreme strength test that saw it being rolled over by a 46-ton heavy truck, once again resetting the bar for power battery safety.

In addition, four new pure electric models were also launched on the Chinese market at the same time, namely the 2021 Tang EV, Qin PLUS EV, Song PLUS EV, and 2021 e2, all equipped with Blade Batteries.

Directly targeting one of the industry’s key pain points, new pure-electric series comes with Blade Batteries

At present, one of the biggest problems hindering the development of the EV market is the combustion and explosion of batteries. With the rapid growth of this market, the number of new energy vehicles on the road will increase substantially, and the risk of battery safety accidents will rise accordingly, which makes power battery safety of paramount importance.

The Blade Battery has successfully passed the battery industry’s so-called “Everest” test – the nail penetration test, which proves it will never spontaneously ignite. With its outstanding safety, strength, range, long life, and power all well recognized by the market, BYD Han, the first model equipped with the Blade Battery, has sold more than 10,000 units each month consecutively since its launch in July 2020. It has successfully established itself in the mid-to-large luxury sedan market.

To address users’ concerns about the safety of EV power batteries, BYD will only use the Blade Battery in all its pure electric models moving forward. As the No. 1 brand in China’s EV production and sales for eight consecutive years, BYD has always been committed to safeguarding consumers’ safe travel. The entire series equipped with Blade Battery demonstrates BYD’s determination and strategic plan to completely end the safety issues related to new energy vehicles.

The upgraded test confirms that Blade Battery remains ultra-safe

BYD has never compromised in its pursuit of safety, constantly adhering to the industry’s more stringent safety standards, like the nail penetration test, which simulates an internal short circuit of the battery, triggering a thermal runaway, which is the root cause for the combustion and explosion of power batteries. The Blade Battery is currently the only power battery in the world that can safely pass the test.

The heavy truck pressure test is a BYD safety standard that is more stringent than the national standard. The test itself saw a 46-ton fully loaded heavy-duty truck drive over the Blade Battery pack, which the battery successfully passed without leakage, deformation or smoke, coming out perfectly intact and ready to be used in an EV. The test results under such extremely harsh test conditions are sufficient to prove the superior performance of the Blade Battery in terms of safety and strength.

Forging ahead, Blade Batteries are open to the world

BYD boasts 26 years of R&D experience in the battery field and has 100% independent R&D and design capabilities, with the key components such as the Blade Battery production line and equipment all being developed in-house, which is part of the brand’s long-held insistence on independently mastering the R&D and manufacturing of core industrial equipment.

At present, the production capacity of Blade Batteries is rapidly increasing, and the quality is stable and reliable, with some of the auto industry’s key players beginning to rely on this ultra-safe battery technology. As leading global carmakers now partner with BYD subsidiary FinDreams Battery, the Blade Battery is set to be successively installed on EV models of mainstream brands at home and abroad.

Leveraging its leading technologies and R&D capabilities, BYD is actively contributing to efforts to strengthen China’s long-term energy security and fulfill the country’s recently announced pledge to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The strategy of switching to Blade Battery for all of the brand’s future pure-electric models will make EVs safer, and help to accelerate the quickening pace of vehicle electrification across the world.

Trusted and reliable, BYD (Build Your Dreams), the world’s premier manufacturer of batteries, celebrates #BatteryDay today and every day.

The Official Sponsor of Mother Nature™, BYD is an innovator in the marketplace.

Earlier this year the company introduced the Blade Battery, which is already Hard at Work™, redefining worldwide battery safety standards. Additionally, BYD battery packs assembled in Lancaster, California, USA are powering heavy duty vehicles including buses, trucks and forklifts from Massachusetts to California.

Many Electric Vehicle manufacturers have fallen into a competition for ever-greater cruising range. BYD takes a different approach. When the range becomes the prime factor to consider, it leads to unreasonable pursuits of “energy density” in the battery industry. It is due to this unpractical focus on “energy density” that safety is often an afterthought in the development of battery power.

Utilizing a proprietary Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry, BYD batteries are the safest and most reliable on the EV market today. The optimized battery pack structure of the Blade increases space utilization by over 50 percent compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu said.

BYD always aims to make battery safety its key indicator of quality. BYD puts its batteries through rigorous safety tests, from burning, to overheating, dropping, perforation, crushing, and even shooting nails through their casings. Throughout these tests, BYD batteries have proven extremely safe, never overheating or exploding.
